Medium Minute-ish 🎂 Birthday Edition ~ Jennifer Medium Minute-ish 🎂 Birthday Edition ~ Jennifer Shaffer Tomorrow I turn a year older, and this week it hit me — hard, and beautifully. My parents came to me in a dream. I almost let it slip away, the way dreams do. Then something during today’s podcast conversation — with Richard Martini, talking with Robert Thurman about how we’re all connected, about meditation and prayer as the gift the universe keeps giving us — cracked it back open. My dad reminded me of something I already knew but needed to remember: my parents are still alive. Just different. Grief doesn’t resolve. It doesn’t get “gotten over.” It just teaches you how to carry love in a new shape, and to let it surface when it needs to. This year I stopped taking things for granted — not because I ever really did before, but because I started communing instead of just noticing. The beach is my medicine now. Sunshine on my face, salt in the air — I don’t rush past it anymore. The biggest lesson: if you’re gripping something so tightly it’s hurting you, that grip is the thing costing you. Cracking open hurts first. But it’s the only door to more. Someone very close to me — she knows who she is — helped me find that door this year. Vulnerability isn’t weakness. It’s the price of admission for real love. Robin Williams said it simplest: love, love. That’s the whole practice. Compassion. Deep thought. More love — for the living, and for the ones who visit us in dreams. To my clients who trust me with their children — the ones here, and the ones who aren’t — thank you. To my friends who push me. One of the best exercises I was ever given was to write a letter from my future self as if it were already three years from now. Where are you living? What are you doing? How do you feel? Who are you sharing your life with? Don’t limit yourself to what seems possible today. Be a little delusional about your future. Write it as if it’s already happened. The universe has a funny way of meeting us where our imagination dares to go.
